Freshman comedy series “Modern Family,” one of the frontrunners at this year’s 2010 Emmy Awards ceremony, opened Sunday’s broadcast with a big victory, as actor Eric Stonestreet won the coveted Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series award.

Eric Stonestreet is simply hilarious as a flamboyant gay dad on the hit ABC comedy Modern Family and the academy seems to have thought so as well. Eric, who plays Cameron Tucker on the ABC comedy, beat out his on-screen husband Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Glee’s Chris Colfer, last year’s winner John Cryer, Modern Family co-star Ty Burrell and Neil Patrick Harris of How I Met Your Mother.

Eric Stonestreet’s success on television brought him the opportunity to break ground on the big screen as well. His breakout role came when he played, Sheldon the hotel desk clerk, in Cameron Crowe’s film “Almost Famous.” That small but memorable role opened many doors for Eric. In 2003 Eric starred in IFC’S cult classic, “Girls Will Be Girls”, which was an official selection to the Sundance Film Festival.

The 2010 edition of the Primetime Emmy Awards opened with a victory for Modern Family and Eric Stonestreet, who won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

AT&T’s pay-as-you-go GoPhone plans are wireless plans made easy, simply pay in advance for what you need. No long-term contracts, credit checks, or surprise bills–just all the benefits of wireless, with no complications. In addition, AT&T’s Rollover Balance feature lets you carry over your unused account balance when you purchase refill minutes before your balance expires. Other great features include no long distance or roaming fees across AT&T’s national service area, the ability to track usage via text messages with an updated balance after each call, and the ability to refill your minutes 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. You can also cancel any time without penalty.

With the Pay As You Go option, you’ll choose the rate plan that fits your needs and then start dialing. The $50 airtime credit is available only to GoPhone Pay As You Go customers activating or upgrading the device contained with the airtime credit package. Airtime or minutes credits are provided only in connection with this new device purchase, and will not be applied to an account using any other device. An alternative to the Android virtual keyboard, the Swype virtual keyboard allows you to input text by swiping the finger with one continuous finger or stylus motion across the screen keyboard. Based on testing, speed and accuracy are equal to or better than the traditional keyboard-tapping method. The cinematic equivalent of a half case of Red Bull chased with donuts, Kick-Ass is a giddy, violent experience–and not your average superhero movie. Based on the comic book by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., it offers a set of heroes who are decidedly without superpowers: Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) decides he’ll be just like a comic-book character, and puts on a ridiculous green suit to fight crime as the mysterious Kick-Ass. Luckily, somebody else had the same idea and comes along to rescue the incompetent crusader: Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and his daughter Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz), who also happen to be running around town wearing masks and vanquishing evil. And here we have the movie’s masterstroke: Hit Girl, a pint-sized preteen who slaughters bad guys and swears like a sailor on leave (and was the focus of a measure of controversy when the movie was released). The main target of our heroes is a gangster (Mark Strong, Sherlock Holmes), whose neglected son (Christopher Mintz-Plasse, McLovin from Superbad) figures he might just pull on a costume himself and become… Red Mist! (One of the many funny things about Kick-Ass is that the superhero names are hopelessly lame.) Director Matthew Vaughn is operating at the same glib level as his Layer Cake, with cutesy song cues galore and a freewheeling appetite for cartoon violence. This means the movie’s high wears off quickly, but it does get high–a crazy, hilarious (and by the way: decidedly R-rated) kick. All that, plus Nicolas Cage executes a deadly Adam West imitation when he pulls on his cape and cowl. That’s entertainment. –Robert Horton

“Release the Kraken!” Ah, it could only be Clash of the Titans, the 2010 remake that retains the instruction to unleash the great beastie from the sea. The 1981 original boasted Ray Harryhausen’s legendary stop-motion technique of animating various mythological creatures–it was his final feature project–and given the cornball approach of the movie in general, that was the main draw. The remake supplies new state-of-the-art special effects (released in 3-D) and a nicely muscular sense of momentum. Sam Worthington (the Avatar guy) plays Perseus, a demigod who doesn’t know that Zeus (Liam Neeson) is his father. Perseus is selected to lead an expedition to find and slay the Medusa, lest Zeus’s evil brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes, in fine slinking mode) rain down misery upon a seaport–and you just know that means the Kraken is coming. Ye gods, it’s a mess, and we haven’t even mentioned the witches and the harpies and the giant scorpions. But if we did, it would be clear that Clash of the Titans is a perfectly dandy popcorn epic, unpretentious and punchy. Director Louis Leterrier (Transporter 2) gets a fine rhythm going during Perseus’s trek, and you can even forgive the hokey shafts-of-light-through-clouds look of Olympus. Leterrier also had the good sense to import the marvelous Danish star Mads Mikkelsen to provide mentoring duties to Perseus; Gemma Arterton and Alexa Davalos fulfill the eye-candy roles. It’s up to individual viewers to choose which they prefer–Harryhausen’s magically hand-wrought creations (his Medusa sequence is an absolute killer) or the 21st century’s slick computer-generated variations. But nostalgia aside, it would be hard to deny that this is one case where the remake tops the original. –Robert Horton

The treatment does not use any drugs of any type to ease the pain of withdrawal and provides drug rehabilitation, education, and prevention services. Much of Narconon’s programs are presented in school classrooms using materials developed by the Narconon professionals. The materials are meant to supplement the school’s existing drug prevention program. Proponents of the Narconon program claim a 70 percent success rate with combating drug addiction compared to a 30 percent rate in other rehabilitation programs. Hubbard created the program after doing extensive research and studies on drug addiction causes and how to combat the disease effectively without the use of drugs.

The premise of the Narconon model states that addicts can resume normal, healthy, productive lives when they work with the skills they are given in the program. They say that Narconon skews information so that it supports their conclusions and doesn’t give the whole picture. Some see that as a form of brain washing and thus write off Narconon as a scam.

Opponents also say that the educational materials given to schools don’t take into account developmental abilities of the students they are trying to reach. The materials for elementary schools are basically the same as the materials for high schools. The materials are more scientific without providing explanations or definitions for presenters to help children with their comprehension of what is being presented.

Even if their information isn’t as accurate as some would hope, they do have a certain amount of success with those who go through their classes. I am lucky enough to work in an IT department that has a few netbooks floating around, so I have had a little time to mess with several netbooks offered by Asus, HP, Dell, and Acer. The majority of netbooks offered by these companies come similarly configured, although with a smaller 10″ screen and without the Nvidia ion video. This netbook performs op par with others that I’ve tested, with several notable exceptions.

First off, it’s video and 3D performance are way ahead of other netbooks I’ve used, as well as some standard laptops that I’ve used which have integrated Intel graphics chips. To test its video capabilities, I grabbed a couple of video files I had stored including a SD, 720p, and 1080p video. All three played without any stuttering or dropped frames, both on the laptop and when connected to my 1080p TV over HDMI. The 1080p video took several seconds to start (probably 15-20), but once it fired up, no problems at all. I also tested both SD and HD videos streaming from Netflix and had the same results, no dropped frames or stuttering. On a standard netbook (non-ion), HD video is unplayable, and SD fullscreen videos have quite a few dropped frames. However, the HP 311 still struggles with HD flash video, but I’ve heard there is a new version of flash in the works which will make use of discrete video processors which should be out in the next month or two, and should address this issue.

To test the 3D video performance, I tried a couple of games that I’ve played on and off over the years. I’m sure there are a few WOW players out there who are wondering if WOW is actually playable on this machine. The answer is yes. I am not a player myself but have dabbled with WOW in the past, and am familiar enough with the game to know what frame rates would be playable or not. I installed the WOW free trial and messed around in starting areas and entered a major city. The frame rate did dip a bit once I entered the city, but never dropped below playable levels. Might not be the ideal choice for major raiding, but good enough for getting your WOW fix on the go. You will notice that session changes take a bit longer due to the low voltage Atom processor, but this also occurs at speeds that I would consider acceptable.

I also tested a game which I do play frequently, Eve Online. Again session changes took a bit longer than what I’m used to, but the frame rate in busy systems stayed pretty steady and always what I would consider quite playable.

I’m not going to go super deep into features like the keyboard and screen, they’re about what you would expect on a netbook, I can type well on the keyboard but find myself slowing down slightly due to it’s smaller size. The 11.6″ screen is clear (although it is reflective, keep this in mind if you plan to be using it in sunlight), and quite a bit more usable than the 10″ screens of slightly smaller netbooks in my opinion. The touchpad is definitely not the best I’ve used, sometimes taking several tries for it to recognize taps. I will mess with the sensitivity settings and see if I can iron this issue out.

My one true gripe about this netbook is it’s lack of RAM. I reviewed it as it came, running 1 GB. I took me about an hour of use to go back on Amazon and order another 2GB. It’s usable, but there are quite a few pauses when running several programs at once. Increasing the RAM should help this out quite a bit, and the session changes in games that I mentioned earlier should take place quite a bit quicker once you add RAM.

All in all, I like this netbook a lot, it meets my requirements and I am happy with the purchase. It is the best netbook I have used thus far, and look forward to when my RAM arrives, which should make the machine about perfect.

Note about upgrading the RAM: this machine will take a 1 or 2 GB chip, PC3-8500 DDR3-1066. It uses the 204 pin DDR3 rather than the 200 pin DDR2 RAM that most netbooks use. The 1 GB that this netbook comes with is not removable, and it has 1 free upgrade slot.
