2011 Ford ExplorerThe 2011 Ford Explorer challenges the SUV status quo by offering luxury levels of convenience, connectivity and technology. From the highly equipped base model that includes MyFord driver connect technology through the volume-series XLT to the luxurious Limited series, Explorer provides SUV buyers unexpected technologies and conveniences normally found in premium SUVs.

The new Explorer is built around the same front-wheel drive unibody platform currently employed by the Taurus and Flex. It’s rigid frame now supports all the underpinnings as well as the exterior sheetmetal. Saving weight (and lower manufacturing costs) is the reason. But because this SUV is based on a passenger car’s platform, that means there’s going to be some compromises.

Trends in the market suggest most buyers aren’t looking for the power of traditional SUVs and would prefer a more fuel-efficient vehicle. Ford’s top U.S. sales analyst George Pipas said that a decade ago, 85 percent of all SUVs sold were truck-based; last year, just 23 percent were.

It has been three years since the previous Ford Explorer was released, so it would be tough to make a rough estimate on the pricing for the 2011 Ford Explorer model now that the manufacturers have not issued an official statement with regards to pricing details. But if one were to examine the features and all other improvements incorporated into this latest model, then experts assume that it will not vary much from the 2008 model’s price. They would go as far as to estimate the price to be somewhere between $27,500 and $32,500.
